The hike is of moderate difficulty. The main trail (Camel Path) is a wide, steady dirt track that takes about 3 hours to walk. The final part consists of 750 stone steps leading to the summit, which requires a bit more effort. There are plenty of Bedouin tea tents along the way where you can sit, rest, and warm up.
Yes! If you feel tired or prefer not to hike the main trail, you can rent a camel from the local Bedouins at the starting point. The camel will carry you up most of the mountain right to the beginning of the 750 stone steps. You will only need to walk up the final steps to reach the top.
Because of the high altitude, the summit of Mount Sinai can get extremely cold, often dropping close to 0°C or below during winter nights, and remaining very chilly even during summer nights. Wearing warm layers, a windproof jacket, a beanie, and gloves is highly recommended. Heavy blankets are also available for rent at the top from Bedouin tents.
The mountain is open for trekking every night, but St. Catherine Monastery is closed on Fridays, Sundays, and during specific religious holidays. We carefully plan our tour days to ensure our guests always experience both the mountain sunrise and the inner monastery tour.
